Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question specific decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
