Trump Demands Jailing of Windy City Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in City

Ex-President Donald J. Trump on midweek demanded the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of not safeguarding ICE agents.

"The city's leader belongs behind bars for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump posted on social media Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor too!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements come alongside the deployment of state military personnel in the Chicago region following directives from the current government, notwithstanding strong objections from Illinois authorities such as Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have a Black man unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on Wednesday. "I am staying put."

Pritzker also replied via online channels, stating: "I will not yield. Now Trump is calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the road toward complete autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, military units from Texas had reached the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 50 miles from Chicago, as the federal government pushes forward with its hardline crime strategy and immigration enforcement operations.

The president has called Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", even though police data indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, such as homicides.

That day, two hundred state guard troops were expected to deploy to the region, with an additional three hundred state military forces preparing to mobilize, per sources. Authorities reportedly stated the troops would avoid law enforcement duties but would protect federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel in combat attire with state guard patches were observed at the military facility in the town. Vehicles marked "Disaster Relief" delivered portable toilets and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in rows. Extra barriers was placed around the perimeter.

The Federal Aviation Administration ordered flight restrictions over the military base for safety concerns until 6 December.

The administration has intensified deportation operations in Chicago in the past month, sparking protests, particularly near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, state and city filed a lawsuit against the administration, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they call "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is scheduled for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also issued an directive on that day prohibiting ICE officers and others from using municipal facilities as operation bases for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has accused Trump of using military forces as "staged tools" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Pritzker said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and normalize the presence of military personnel under his direct command."

The nearly 150-year-old Posse Comitatus Act limits the military's role in civilian law enforcement. However, Trump has said he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a president to send regular army in regions that are failing to suppress an uprising or are resisting national authority.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has sent or discussed sending troops to over ten cities, including major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the military presence is essential to combat crime and protect ICE officers.

Data shows that serious offenses across the US has decreased in the past few years. In the city, for instance, homicides were down 31% to under three hundred through August, according to police data.

New survey data published on that day found that most Americans disapprove of the deployment of troops without an external threat.
