Time is optimal to alter Manchester United's formation - Amorim states.

Man Utd squad members in training
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was one of seven senior players to miss the holiday period win against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that changing Manchester United's tactical system due to public noise would have signaled "his demise" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim moved away from his customary three-at-the-back formation with wing-backs and opted to field an standard back four with two central midfielders.

He himself conceded this at times transformed into a back six in the closing phase as his squad held on for a crucial result - securing only their second shutout of the campaign.

Despite he once famously remarked that not even the Pope could pressure him to change his system, Amorim insists the ability to play with varied formations has consistently been part of his strategy.

Nevertheless, he clarifies he could only make the switch when his team were faring sufficiently well - or else it would look as if he was succumbing to external noise.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I realized maybe I don't have the players to excel in that system, but it was the commencement of a journey," he said.

"We were trying to build an style. Currently is a separate juncture. We are missing a full complement of personnel, and we must adjust, so they understand why we are switching things up.

"The change isn't because of the demands of the media, or the supporters.

"When media criticize altering the formation constantly, I cannot make a change because the players will believe I'm altering things because of external voices and I feel that is the downfall for the manager.

"When we are playing well in our preferred setup, that becomes the right time to change.

"We are going to develop into a stronger team because when all the personnel are back, we are not intending to play with three defenders in every match."

Squad Challenges Loom Large

With just two victories in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is correct to state his side have been in good form.

He is, though, working with a depleted roster, with seven first-team players already ruled out for the upcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will rise if midfielder Mason Mount fails to shake off the knock that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is understood to be pushing his manager to let him to make a comeback following his muscle problem.

"Fernandes is already saying he needs to practice," said Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No way. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Leadership Is Unwavering

However, the Portuguese star will almost certainly continue to be a prominent presence, as whereas most injured players view matches from the stands, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to carry on providing insight.

"He is a natural leader," he declared. "He must not be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's silent and offering advice. He's constantly communicating. That is the reason he's the captain.

"He has negative aspects at times - the way he gesticulates - but he has a lot of positive qualities. Even after he recovers, he goes to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many aspects that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a leader."

Return Timeline for Injured Players

While the exact timeline for the captain's return - and that of fellow injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
