This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical physical horror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
