European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
