Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Return

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this season. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
