2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Feedback
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a distinct vision.
The president stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
The news echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Dear Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to continue.”
With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s the game playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. After a period of conversations, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His management and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in welcoming Ben next week. We are all looking forward to persist witnessing the development of the game in the weeks to come.
David
Background of the New Leader
Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the description reads. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that evolve every round. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The option is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or supported systems, but players can expect further news as development advances.
